PAYE is Pay As You Earn and operates to collect income tax and national insurance contributions from employees and employers.

PAYE is normally due 14 days after PAYE month end which is 5th of each month. NB If liability is less than £1,500 per month, then payments may be made quarterly.

Employers may be required to pay employees Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) and other state benefits. In certain circumstances these benefits may be claimed back from HMRC. This is achieved by reducing the PAYE liability.
